QUESTION: Dear Rabbi Mermelstein:
I enjoyed reading your page. I am
anxiously awaiting the arrival of a brand new, bouncing tactical Savage
300 Win. Mag. I am looking for a round that will: fire clean, fire
accurately, out to long distances occassionally, and not be excessively
wearing on the barrel. Most of my shooting will be at 100 yds, but I
will also compete at 1000 yds., once a month or so. The only
stipulation my "group" applies is thus: A stock gun, factory ammo
-- they check CLOSELY -- and the entire rig must cost, with
scope, less than 1200 bucks ... I've got the gun, I'm getting the
scope, please help with some accurate ammo!

ANSWER: Mr. Mills,
I've had excellent results from my
Win. Mod. 70 (post '64) .300 Win. Mag. using handloads built around
Hornady 180 gr. Spire Points, 75 gr. of H4831, and Federal 210 primers.
I use Federal 215 primers in .300 Win. Mag handloads when the
thermometer drops. If you don't handload, try Hornady Frontier
ammunition with their own 180 gr. SP. You're handicapping yourself by
relying on factory ammunition. You're also busting your bank account.
That ammunition is nearly $1 per round. Ouch!
Sincerely,
R. Mermelstein
