QUESTION: Dear Rabbi Mermelstein:
I want to hunt with my Glock 20
this fall. I hunt deer in Georgia where the Department of Natural
Resources requires that any handgun caliber must produce 500 ft/lbs of
energy at 100 yards. There are no commercially produced loadings that
will meet that minimum. The closest is a Hornady loading that falls
about 25 ft/lbs short.
Would you recommend a loading (bullet, powder and primer) that would meet my needs?
Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Dear Harvey,
I've researched every external ballistics table available from all
the major bullet manufacturers, and 500 ft/lbs. at 100 yards is out of
the question for the 10 mm Auto. To make that figure, a Hornady 200 gr.
XTP would need a muzzle velocity of 1250 fps to just make 500 ft/lbs.
at the necessary distance. Hornady lists a maximum muzzle velocity of
1150 fps with that bullet. Any bullet weighing less than 200 grs. can't
come anywhere near the required energy even at maximum velocities. You
won't be able to hunt with your Glock 20 and still abide by the law.
It's not fair to the game either. An animal deserves to be harvested
humanely.
Sincerely,
R. Mermelstein
