ANSWER: Dear Van,
The 9 mm Makarov (9x18) is a useful cartridge, similar in
ballistics to the our .380 ACP. You could do a lot worse in your choice
of a home defense weapon. It's a bit on the minimal side, though. Since
concealability is not a consideration, a more potent cartridge and a
larger frame gun would make a lot of difference in your favor.
