QUESTION: Dear Rabbi Mermelstein:

I read your article about the Mini-30 and am now curious about the accuracy of the Mini-14.  Is the inaccuracy solely a factor of the 7.62 chambering?  How accurate is the Mini-14?

ANSWER:
Dear Jonathan,

I hate being the courier of bad news. An out of the box Ruger Mini-14 is hard pressed to shoot 4-inch groups at 100 yards. Many gunsmiths do a brisk business accurizing these fun little rifles. They are great for very informal plinking or large predator control at relatively close range. Law enforcement agencies have begun to find them quite useful for certain SWAT operations. As a target grade rifle, though, it hasn't much purpose. It was never designed to be target rifle. The .223 Rem. cartridge is not to blame.

Sincerely,

R. Mermelstein
