"Ask the Rabbi" by R. Mermelstein

QUESTION: Dear Rabbi
Mermelstein:
This is an excerpt from a book written by aviator Billy Mitchell's sister Ruth which I found at "Complete Excerpts".
This story is new to me and leaves me wondering why we are in
Yugoslavia. There must have been a better way. If you have time
to read this, I would be grateful if you could lend any weight to the
veracity of the story. Is it your understanding that the Serbs
were the best friends that WW II Jews had? If you are caught as
much by surprise as I was, could you direct me to someone who could
give me an authoritative answer?
Thank you again,
ED

Letter by Jewish doctor
An excerpt from book "Lest we forget", by Ms. Ruth Mitchell
Published by: Doubleday, Garden City, New York: 1943
ANSWER: Dear Doctor,
This article is stunning. If it's
true, it is a gem. I know of no one to authenticate it or dispute it.
It places the Serbs, during W.W.II, right alongside the Danes, the
Dutch, and all the Righteous Gentiles who sought to save Jews from
Hitler's Final Solution. A lot changes over 50 years. Had only
Milosevic shown such compassion for ethnic Albanians. Nadich, cited in
the article, did little, it seems, to form the mind of Slobodan
Milosevic. I'll print out this article as an example of what 50 years
can do to a formerly civilized and life loving culture.
Sincerely,
R. Mermelstein
