QUESTION: Dear Rabbi
Mermelstein:
What are your feelings on thr U.S. Taxpayer's Party and its stand on the Second Amendment?

ANSWER: Dear Sir,
If I'm not mistaken, this party's
platform is taxpayers' rights. I haven't seen any material from them
addressing the Second Amendment. Please correct me if I'm wrong. It has
been known to happen, especially when trying to sort out the views of a
great many smaller political parties.
Sincerely,
R. Mermelstein
Addendum January 16, 2000:
My thanks to a member for supplying this information:
Rabbi Mermelstein,
I was browsing through the Q&A at http://www.gunownersalliance.com/AskTheRabbi.htm tonight and realized that I could help you to provide a better answer to the question about the US Taxpayer's Party.
You seem to be soliciting this sort of input by including the comment
"Please correct me if I'm wrong," in your answer, so I hope you find
this helpful.
The US Taxpayer's Party has been renamed The Constitution Party. Their 1999 platform statement on gun control is quoted below:
Gun Control
The right to bear arms is inherent in the right of self defense,
defense of the family, and defense against tyranny, conferred on the
individual and the community by our Creator to safeguard life, liberty,
and property, as well as to help preserve the independence of the
nation.
The right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment
to the Constitution; it may not properly be infringed upon or denied.
The Constitution Party upholds the right of the citizen to keep and
bear arms. We oppose attempts to prohibit ownership of guns by
law-abiding citizens, and stand against all laws which would require
the registration of guns or ammunition.
We emphasize that when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have them.
In such circumstances, the peaceful citizen’s protection against the
criminal would be seriously jeopardized.
This platform statement is available on their web site at http://www.constitutionparty.org/ by clicking on "Our Platform" and then "Gun Control."
I consider their stated position to be entirely acceptable. In fact, I
have trouble imagining any better statement they could make. If I've
missed something, I'd appreciate your pointing it out.
Regards,
David
