There is not one iota difference between the two. Winchester submitted an experimental round, called the T65, for US Army evaluation to replace the venerable .30-06 as a semi-automatic rifle and light machine gun cartridge. A search for such a replacement had been in the works since the Armistice following World War One. In 1952, Winchester took the shrewd step of introducing the round to the sport shooting public. The same round was adopted by the US military in 1954, but rifles were not issued to our armed forces until sometime in 1957. Today, the 7.62 NATO is the standard light machine gun cartridge of all NATO member nations. Its adaptability to so many rifle action types and single shot pistols will ensure its continuing popularity as long as the right to keep and bear arms exists in America.
