QUESTION: Dear Rabbi Mermelstein:

What is the difference between a so-called semi-automatic assualt rifle and a semi-automatic deer rifle?

And what will the communist governor of California, Gray Davis be after next?

ANSWER: Dear Sir
,

The term "assault rifle" was coined by the Germans: Sturmgewehr. Mechanically there is no significant difference between those evil looking black guns with flash suppressers and bayonet lugs to the Remington Model 8, introduced for the sport hunting market nearly a century ago. Each rifle is self loading, using either recoil or gas to actuate the action to fire one round each time the trigger is pulled. The modern Remington Model 7400 works essentially on the same gas operated action design as the M-16/AR-15 rifle. Both are box magazine fed. To the state of California, et al, the Remington 7400 is acceptable, for the time being, since it doesn't have a protruding pistol grip. If you can figure out the logic behind one being banned and the other legal to purchase and use for hunting, please write back. I haven't a clue. What will CA Gov. Davis and his Attorney General ban next? Stay tuned, and see http://www.gunownersalliance.com/Rabbi_0205.htm

Sincerely,

R. Mermelstein
